How this started
About Follow the Tide
It started with a story Brett's father told him, about a ride he had organised fifteen years earlier.
Graeme Jarvie took his cycling club from Kosi Bay down to Cape Vidal, on the beach the whole way, and he was still talking about it years later. Brett and Jack had just finished university and had time on their hands to go adventuring, so they decided to give the ride a go themselves and find out why it was spoken about the way it was.
Somewhere out on that coastline it stopped being a ride they were curious about and became one they thought other people should get to do.
What followed was a lot of days and hours up that coast, working out exactly when the tide makes the ride possible and how to run it properly rather than simply get through it. Both of them surf, and on those test rides they kept passing points and beach breaks with nobody on them. That is where Surf the Tide came from.
Follow the Tide stays deliberately small. We are not a big commercial operation and have no interest in becoming one. Groups are private, departures are few, and we leave no trace: the coastline is handed back exactly as we found it.
